چکیده

Process-based modelling approaches developed for field crops were adapted to address the behaviour of indoor-grown soil-less lettuce under alternative growth conditions. The equations for crop growth and development were simplified to common and consistent terms, re-designed against the peculiarities of a controlled environment and implemented into an easy-to-use, management-oriented, software tool. An array of experiments, where lettuce was grown in growth chambers under waterand nutrient-unlimited conditions, at various temperature and radiation levels, was performed to build a data set to evaluate the model. Critical parameters and suitable relationships were identified and evaluated for possible use in management-oriented applications. Summary statistics of the evaluation indicated a satisfactory description of crop growth (EFO 0.50) and development (G1 day discrepancy). As a result, there is a potential for the present approach to be applied to soil-less lettuce systems under alternative management options. 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Root exudation and root development of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. cv. Tizian) as affected by different soils

Development and activity of plant roots exhibit high adaptive variability. Although it is well-documented, that physicochemical soil properties can strongly influence root morphology and root exudation, particularly under field conditions, a comparative assessment is complicated by the impact of additional factors, such as climate and cropping history. To overcome these limitations, in this stu...

Effect of Root-Zone Temperature on Growth and Quality of Hydroponically Grown Red Leaf Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. cv. Red Wave)

Soil temperature influences crop growth and quality under field and greenhouse conditions; however, precise investigation using controlled cultivation systems is largely lacking. We investigated effects of root-zone temperatures on growth and components of hydroponically grown red leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. cv. Red Wave) under a controlled cultivation system at 20 ̊C. Compared with ambient ...

Influence of Different Colored Plastic Mulch on the Growth of Lettuce (Lactuca sativa)

Mulches bring several benefits to lettuce cultivation.A study on the lettuce ‘Red Rapids’ has been conducted to determine the influence of the different colored plastic mulch on its growth. The experiment consisted of five color treatments as follows; treatment 1- metallic silver (control), treatment 2- red, treatment 3- orange, treatment 4- yellow and treatment 5-green. Results showed that the...

Enrofloxacin and Ciprofloxacin Uptake by Plants from Soil

Very small amounts of pharmaceuticals present in everyday food may generate strains of resistant microorganisms in human and animal organisms. This study involves the uptake and accumulation of some widely used fluoroquinolones – enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin – by plants cultivated in soil augmented with drugs using the microbiological agar diffusion method. Bacillus subtilis was used as the t...
